Transition Landing Pad

Guided by each family’s concerns, priorities and resources, Virginia early intervention personnel strive to provide supports and services that facilitate smooth, seamless transitions into, within, and out of early intervention services. This landing pad highlights research, policies, and position statements (What Does the Evidence Say?), print materials (Read All About It), videos and DVDs (See for Yourself), and web resources (Find It Online) to support those efforts. Featured resources are high-quality, readily available, and no-cost or low-cost. A special section (Virginia Guidance) features competencies, technical assistance documents, and other state-specific resources.

Entering a New Preschool: How Service Providers and Families Can Ease the Transitions of Children Turning Three Who Have Special Needs

This booklet discusses issues children and families may experience when children enter group settings at age three. Strategies for transition planning, preparing children for the change, and working with families and staff from sending and receiving programs before and after transitions are descrived. Additional resources, including a list of books to prepare children for transition, are provided.

National Early Childhood Transition Center (NECTC)

The Center's mission is to examine factors that promote successful transitions between infant/toddler programs, preschool programs, and public school programs for young children with disabilities and their families. NECTC has developed rich resources (including a searchable database of transition research, policy and practice), authored practical and scholarly publications, and clarified complicated issues such as transition issues and barrier for children with special needs who are culturally and linguistically diverse. All NECTC resources are available through the project website.

The Beach Center provides a wealth of information with a strong emphasis on family views and experiences. Materials are organized by experience-based knowledge (videos, commentaries, and conversations), research, and policy. Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia Practice Manual

Chapter 7 provides guidance for service coordinators in planning individual child and family transitions during IFSP development. This includes important dates, notifications, requirements, steps, and activities. Chapter 8 specifies transition-related responsibilities for service coordinators during IFSP implementation and review.
