I think there are many early interventionists experiencing those struggles with having to be stretched between virtual work and children’s remote learning, Karolyn. Hang in there. Have you found any strategies that work especially well for you? I’m sure others would love to hear them. 🙂

I have had a significantly reduced caseload since COVID restrictions started in March 2020. I have been seeing all of my clients through LVV as I am a social worker, this has worked so far. I’m struggling with providing service and having my kids on full time remote learning. This will help me to stay current and focused on families

Great suggestion, Barbara. Here is a link to a doc we use in VA that walks through the steps of the EI process and cross references them with the child and family outcome indicators, in case this is helpful for reference.

We are also working on a video and IFSP narrative example that will provide an example of the conversation with a family. I’ll try to post something on the blog when the video is available!

Would it be possible to have an example of the IFSP process — how you are using the Indicators to guide a conversation with the family? It would be helpful to see examples as many of us are very visual and kinesthetic learners

We have been working extensively to familiarize ourselves with the 3 OSEP Indicators, Sandy Harrington has worked with us. We went to the Weaving Workshop in Norfolk. While there, we brainstormed with two Chesapeake providers who sent us examples of their IFSPs. We have had several staff meetings which have focused on these. We now have copies of the booklet and the laminated indicator sheet at our desks and in our assessment boxes. The booklet is helping lots. It helps at the intake as well as for reporting out. Little by little, we are changing our focus.

It sounds like you and your team try hard to keep the discussion balanced, Barbara, which is a great way to go! I think that sometimes, the shutdown is hard to avoid because it is a personal reaction, but being sure to include the parent in the discussion by inviting his/her input and ideas about all of the things you said – where the child is, where she needs to go, and how we are going to help get there – can make a huge difference.

Adjusting to reporting the assessment from the perspective of the 3 OSEP child outcomes/indicators does take time. What has your team done to help you all make the transition? Are you using the indicator booklet to help you report out?

This topic has been on our minds a lot since we are going from ELAP-based assessment to Child indicator based. I try to start with the positive parts of the ELAP and give a very brief explanation of the positives. Then I move to the delay(s). The therapist will usually blend into the conversation at this point and we talk together with the parent about where the child is and where s/he needs to go and how we are going to help the child and family get there. I have experienced that shutdown and seen it happen too many times. I feel like the 3 Indicators focus should help keep us and the parents focused and pro-active.
