Thanks for your insights, Arlene. I completely agree – it’s an important discussion that we often don’t take the time to process with others. We might just struggle on our own. I love your phrase “mentally navigate” because home visiting requires a lot of that!

As a home visiting Supervisor, I see similar struggles with my staff, whether experienced or new. Giving them permission to ponder this delicate relationship and how they fit in is so important. It is very easy to get caught up in the layers of responsibility and requirements of our role, agency, program, etc., that we rarely stop and mentally navigate ourselves to the point where we decide to modify our approach or accept that we are doing the very best we can.

Per “staff”/provider- Yes, it is complex work and we constantly need to remind ourselves to keep guiding the approach towards routines and not straight strategies to increase the real practice, where change can take place.
