{"id":120,"date":"2012-08-01T19:52:02","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T23:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/veipd.org\/earlyintervention\/?p=120"},"modified":"2020-06-25T03:14:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T03:14:38","slug":"embedding-strategies-into-family-routines-one-pts-perspective-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.veipd.org\/earlyintervention\/2012\/08\/01\/embedding-strategies-into-family-routines-one-pts-perspective-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Embedding Strategies into Family Routines: One PT\u2019s Perspective (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my previous post I discussed five tips that will help early interventionists in collaborating with families to embed therapeutic strategies into their daily routines.\u00a0 To review, the tips are: start with a routine based interview, incorporate family goals into strategies, set up the environment, follow the family\u2019s and child\u2019s lead, and be creative.\u00a0 In this post I wanted to give early interventionists specific examples.\u00a0 Not all families go to the park or take their children shopping, so I tried to use activities that most families do daily.\u00a0 The following are some ideas for incorporating intervention strategies into daily routines:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Meals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Language \u2013 can work on signs \u201cmore\u201d, \u201ceat\u201d, \u201cdrink\u201d, \u201cplease\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fine motor \u2013 fine pincer grasp to pick up finger foods, hold cup, practice using utensils, wiping face and hands (also a sensory activity)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Gross motor \u2013 practice pulling up to stand, climbing up into high chair or regular chair<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Social\/Emotional \u2013 practice playing peek-a-boo with wash cloth during cleaning up after meal<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Sensory \u2013 opportunities to play with their food, finger painting with applesauce, pudding, spaghetti, etc.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Diaper changes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Gross motor \u2013 rolling, transitioning in\/out of sitting, pull to sit for head control, stretches (because there are many opportunities to stretch throughout the day and it\u2019s natural to stretch to take off\/put on clothes and diapers)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fine motor \u2013 playing with toys during changes, practicing zippers, large buttons<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Language \u2013 work on opposites: on\/off, up\/down, and body parts<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Laundry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Gross motor \u2013 push basket (upright or upside down), pull to stand at over turned basket, toss socks into basket<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Cognitive \u2013 sort colors, match socks<\/p>\n<p>Sir John Lubbock once said, \u201cWhat we see depends mainly on what we look for\u201d.\u00a0 <strong>As early interventionists, what opportunities do we look for?\u00a0 What are some other daily routines families have?\u00a0<\/strong> We would love to hear your ideas for embedding strategies into specific family routines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my previous post I discussed five tips that will help early interventionists in collaborating with families to embed therapeutic strategies into their daily routines.\u00a0 To review, the tips are: start with a routine based interview, incorporate family goals into strategies, set up the environment, follow the family\u2019s and child\u2019s lead, and be creative.\u00a0 In [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_s2mail":"yes","footnotes":""},"categories":[139,10,12,14],"tags":[37,43,46,50,54,58,59,62,67,68,77,79,86,87,96,100],"class_list":["post-120","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-all","category-engaging-collaborating-with-families","category-intervention-visits","category-practical-strategies-for-intervention","tag-collaboration","tag-daily-routines","tag-development","tag-early-intervention","tag-embedding","tag-families","tag-family-centered-practices","tag-home-visits","tag-implementation","tag-infants","tag-motor-development","tag-natural-environment","tag-parent-professional-partnership","tag-parents","tag-research-to-practice","tag-routines-based","clearfix"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
