CAUTION: We strongly caution caregivers and early intervention providers that only a trained
physical therapist or physician should teach caregivers how to stretch an infant’s neck safely.
In this webinar, while the therapists mentioned stretching as part of conservative physical therapy
treatment for torticollis, the presenters did not discuss how to properly stretch an infant, as this
was not the proper forum. We want to caution anyone who provides stretching techniques to
babies with torticollis that if a baby has one of the more serious types of torticollis, stretches
could cause profound damage. The presenters in this webinar provided activities and strategies
that promoted "active range of motion" - in other words, the infant would move his head through
his available range of motion without the caregiver or therapist providing passive stretches.
Please consult a pediatrician before beginning any treatment program for torticollis.
