I love the idea of practicing holding hands! The same principles apply and the waiting game can really help when the child turns into a noodle when the parent tries to hold his hand! Waiting until the child is standing and holding the parent's hand before taking a step forward can be really effective. I remember doing that with my son and it only took a few times for him to get the message that we won't go where he wants to go unless he was holding my hand. Thanks for sharing, David!

We had a great conversation with our EI staff on this topic today and we really appreciated the "she is in charge" reminder as well as the 2 "simple phrases" instead of the typical lengthy lecturing. One of our professionals has coached mothers to practice hand-holding in the home first (with the simple phrases)...then in the back yard...then in the neighborhood...and finally among traffic. Practicing, paired with your waiting game, sounds like a great idea! Thanks for your always-relevant topics and suggestions, Dana.

Thanks so much, Mandie, for getting back to us! I think you asked fantastic questions and really took advantage of the situation at Walmart. You could have just shrugged your shoulders since it went well but you USED it as a great reflection opportunity with the child's father. Being able to reflect on the success, rather than just the struggle, offered the father a wonderful opportunity to see what HE did well that day that made the visit go better. Way to go!!

And hey, keep the success stories coming! That's really how we learn from each other!

The visit at Walmart went REALLY well! The little guy was a perfect angel:) But I felt like I had to do SOMETHING with it. It obviously does not go well most of the time, so I asked "Why do you think it went so well today?" Dad answered, "Well, he just had a good nap and a snack before we came; I guess really, it doesn't go well when he is tired and or hungry." We then talked about being able to come shopping after a nap and snack more often.
Now I have another grocery store visit with another family this Thursday. Thanks to this blog and my co workers who have all been working on developing good coaching questions, not only do I feel more prepared, but I think Mom feels more prepared. When talking about it, I asked "What do you want a trip to the store to look like?" She answered and I was able to ask "where do you want to start to make that happen?" and "what are you going to do if your child responds like this, or like that?" I am hoping it goes well! And am always open to more ideas to help it go well and or more great coaching questions!!

You're welcome, Mandie! Please let me know how your visit to Walmart went. I'd love to hear about it and if you and the parent came up with any great strategies! :)
