As I know you know, Pam, the research tells us that changing professional practices is often grounded in changing beliefs. It makes such sense that it would be the same for families who most likely have a traditional model of therapy as their frame of reference. I like how you describe your discussions as slow and continuous, over time. So much of the success of EI is grounded in these ongoing discussions!

We are up against a difficult culture and false belief by many that direct weekly (2x per week, etc.) therapeutic child handling and interaction produces the best outcomes…..perhaps in the moment, but not long-term. Therefore, my preliminary success has been when I have had frank discussions, slowly and continually with parents, to explain the strong influence of the family and community on ANY child’s development. This is logical when presented correctly and once parents trust in the process, they BELIEVE they have some control, which leads to some power over their situation. They BELIEVE they have skills and can assist in creating additional skills to best help their own child.

You’re welcome, Mandie! It sounds like we’re in the same boat as you guys here in VA. What have you found challenging? Is it helping families understand how coaching works? Or supporting your providers?
